The Relationship of Recovery Room Nurses' Knowledge, Attitude and Nursing Performance about Postoperative Pain Management

Abstract

|
Purpose: This study was done to know the relationship of recovery room nurses' knowledge, attitude and nursing performance about postoperative pain management for effective pain management.
Methods: The data was collected from 113 recovery room nurses in D. Metropolitan City, who completed self-administered questionnaires. The data was analyzed by using SPSS/WIN version 18.0.
Results: The point of nurses' knowledge about pain management was average 10.53 point out of 15, knowledge about analgesics was average 7.10 point out of 10 and knowledge about sorting analgesics was average 7.33 point out of 9. The point of nurses' attitude was average 11.23 point out of 12 and nursing performance was average 2.92 point out of 4. The points of nurses' knowledge about pain management were correlated by their age(p<.001), marital status(p<.001), religion(p=.048), social status(p=.006), the highest level of schooling(p=.001), career of recovery room(p<.001) and clinical career(p<.001). The points of nurses' attitude were correlated by marital status(p=.019), career of recovery room(p=.024) and clinical career(p=.006). Nurses' knowledge about pain management had significant correlation with nurses' attitude and knowledge about analgesics, but not with nursing performance. There was no correlation between nurses' attitude and nursing performance.
Conclusion: Therefore, it is necessary to develop educational programs to improve knowledge and nursing performance about pain management for recovery room nurses. We also consider further research should be performed to find out major factors for improving nursing performance.
